National Television Awards 2019: Bodyguard and Killing Eve among nominees

Story by Jack Foley

HIT BBC dramas Bodyguard and Killing Eve have been shortlisted for the 2019 National Television Awards (NTA) just hours after triumphing at the Golden Globes.

Both shows are up for best new drama, a category which is new to the awards this year. While Bodyguard‘s Richard Madden is up for best drama performance alongside Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer.

Ironically, Madden triumphed in his category at the Golden Globes, but Comer was not nominated. Instead, her co-star Sandra Oh enjoyed Golden Globes glory.

Other new dramas up for the award include Sky’s A Discovery of Witches, Girlfriends and BBC drama The Cry – another show which captivated Sunday night audiences.

Of the returning dramas, audience favourites such as Call The Midwife, Doctor Who, Our Girl and Casualty will face tough competition from Peaky Blinders in the best drama category.

Completing the best drama performance category alongside Comer and Madden, meanwhile, are Peaky Blinders‘ Cillian Murphy, as well as Doctor Who‘s Jodie Whittaker and Our Girl‘s Michelle Keegan.

In other areas, Ant and Dec, who have won the TV presenter category at the NTAs for the last 17 years, will be looking to make it 18 in a row despite the problems surrounding Ant’s personal life. His only presenting gig alongside Dec last year was on Saturday Night Takeaway.

In the serial drama, or best soap award, last year’s winner – Emmerdale – goes up against the usual suspects: Coronation Street, EastEnders and Hollyoaks.

This year’s awards ceremony will be broadcast live on ITV on January 22.
