National TV Awards 2011: Sherlock lands three nominations

Sherlock

Story by Jack Foley

POPULAR BBC drama Sherlock has landed three nominations at the National TV Awards 2011.

The show is in the running for best drama, while its two leading men – Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman – are up for best dramatic actor, for playing Sherlock and Dr Watson respectively.

Another popular BBC show, Doctor Who, has also bagged two nominations – for best drama and best actor (for newcomer Matt Smith).

Richard Armitage and Peter Firth will be facing off against each other for Spooks, which is also shortlisted for best drama… but all those in the dramatic actor category face stiff competition from Kenneth Branagh and Wallander.

Among the other notable nominees among the various categories, new ITV breakfast show Daybreak – fronted by former One Show presenters Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley – has been nominated in the topical magazine show category just two weeks after its launch.

And Katie Price and her ex-husband Peter Andre will compete in the same category with their reality shows, What Katie Did Next and Peter Andre: The Next Chapter.

The most popular talent show category will be contested by The X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing, Britain’s Got Talent, Dancing On Ice and Don’t Stop Believing.

While soap die-hards Coronation Street, EastEnders, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale all go head to head for serial drama.

Departing BBC host Jonathan Ross is up for the most popular entertainment award for Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, which ended in July after a nine-year run. He faces competition from Piers Morgan’s Life Stories and Ant and Dec’s Push The Button.

The 16th annual National Television Awards will be presented on January 26, 2011, and will be hosted by Dermot O’Leary at London’s O2 Arena. Viewers can vote now online
