NICOLE Scherzinger has joined the cast of the small screen remake of Dirty Dancing.

According to TV Line, the singer and Pussycat Dolls’ former front-woman has signed up to play Penny, the role originally played by Cynthia Rhodes in the 1987 film.

She will join Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin (of Little Miss Sunshine fame) and Colt Prattes in the remake, as well as Will & Grace’s Debra Messing, who stars as Baby’s mother.

The TV version of the film will run for three hours and, like the film and the musical play it also spawned, the story will focus on the burgeoning romance between Baby (Breslin), a vacationing rich girl, and Johnny (Prattes), her working-class dance instructor.

The roles in the original were played by Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.

Scherzinger’s role of Penny is Johnny’s dance partner, who is also part of the entertainment staff at the Catskills resort where Baby and her family are staying.

Scherzinger has previously guest starred on TV comedy How I Met Your Mother and Wizards of Waverly Place, while her stage work includes Rent at the Hollywood Bowl. She also impressed in the 2014 London revival of Cats where she played Grizabella.

Dirty Dancing will be screened on ABC in the US bit the network has yet to announce a premiere date for the TV movie.
