Nina Dobrev quits The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries

Story by Jack Foley

NINA Dobrev has announced to fans that she is quitting The Vampire Diaries.

The actress will not continue in the role of Elena Gilbert beyond the sixth series, telling fans she was leaving to get on with the “next chapter” of her life.

Rumours of her departure have been rife ever since pictures of her on a group holiday in Georgia were shared on social media by the show’s crew, with the hashtag #ninawewillmissyou.

But in a bid to get ahead of months of gossip and speculation, Dobrev then posted on Instagram: “I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn’t just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party.”

The lengthy statement continued: “Until then, I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert’s life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her – and to my work family – as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend’s pictures were just the beginning).

“You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for ‘that Twilight TV show’. I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what’s coming, you don’t.”

In hit TV show The Vampire Diaries, Dobrev’s Elena Gilbert is a late teenage girl who becomes involved with two vampires – Stefan Salvatore and his brother Damon. Her ensuing tale saw the character start off as human, then become a vampire, a doppelganger, “a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human [and] a human pretending to be a doppelganger”.

In a statement issued to US trade publication The Hollywood Reporter, Julie Plec, the show’s executive producer, said that it was “bittersweet and beautiful” to say goodbye to Dobrev.

She continued: “After six-plus years together, the entire cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries has reached a level of closeness that I don’t think any of us ever expected. Nina is excited to spread her wings, get some rest, travel the world and also take it by storm, and we support her a thousand-fold.

“We will miss Nina and the 400 characters she played, but we look forward to the insane and exciting challenge of continuing to tell stories of our Salvatore Brothers and our much-loved and gifted ensemble.”

Another of the show’s stars, Michael Trevino, is also set to leave as well. But series seven of the show has been confirmed and will go ahead without Dobrev, even though many fans are confused as to how it can go on without her character Elena.

Dobrev has started to make steps into movies, having appeared in buddy cop comedy Let’s Be Cops and The Perks of Being A Wallflower. She will next be seen in comedy-horror The Final Girls.
