Patrick Dempsey poised to leave Grey's Anatomy
Story by Jack Foley
PATRICK Dempsey looks set to quit Grey’s Anatomy after its forthcoming eighth season.
Speaking to Italian Vanity Fair, the actor said that the next season will mark the end of a long journey for him.
“It’s gonna be my last,” he said. “I do not know what’s going to happen to the other characters, but for me it’s done.”
Dempsey intends to focus on a film career, the foundations for which appear to have been laid with a number of forthcoming roles, including one in this summer’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
But he admitted that checking out of Seattle Grace after seven years would be a “bittersweet” experience because “it’s been great and a great part of my life”.
He qualified that by saying: “But I can’t see me doing it anymore.”
Dempsey is one of several original cast members whose contracts expire at the end of season 8, including his on-screen wife Ellen Pompeo who remains undecided.
But show creator Shonda Rhimes is bracing herself for the worst case scenario, saying: “It [season eight] might be the last hurrah for a lot of them; you never know… Everybody has an individual choice to make and I get that. All the originals are in play.”
As for what to do with Dempsey’s character, the field is similarly open, although Entertainment Weekly quotes Rhimes as saying: “I feel like Meredith and Derek are meant to be together forever, and we’re going to make sure that in the end they end up together, one would hope — unless one of them dies or something.”
