Penelope Cruz to star in Versace: American Crime Story
Story by Jack Foley
PENELOPE Cruz is set to head the cast of Ryan Murphy anthology Versace: American Crime Story.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Spanish actress will play Donatella Versace, the sister of slain fashion designer Gianni Versace, who took over the company following his death.
Versace, which follows the franchise’s second season, Katrina, will explore the July 1997 assassination of legendary designer Gianni Versace (to be played by Edgar Ramirez).
His killer, Andrew Cunanan (Glee‘ Darren Criss), committed suicide eight days later as Miami Dade police were on the verge of capturing the serial killer behind five slayings.
The 10-episode third season is due to make its debut in 2018, following hot on the heels of Katrina.
Versace will be based on the book Vulgar Favours by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth.
Tom Rob Smith, who penned London Spy, will write the first two and multiple subsequent episodes.
Versace is notable for marking Cruz’s first TV series – but she follows an increasing number of Hollywood stars who are finding gainful employment on the small screen. Indeed, Annette Bening is set to star in the Katrina-themed second season of the FX anthology.
Cruz’s big screen credits include her 2009 Academy Award-winning supporting role in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona as well as Oscar-nominated performances in Nine and Volver.
