Story by Jack Foley
RAY Winstone is to star in a new two-part crime drama for Sky1 named Moonfleet.
Based on the classic John Meade Falkner novel of the same name, the series will follow Winstone’s Elzevir Block, the head of a gang of smugglers in 18th Century Dorset, who recruits young John Trenchard on a mission to “hunt for a fabled lost diamond”.
The ensuing journey promises to be “full of action, friendship and humour”.
The role of Trenchard is to be played by The White Queen star Aneurin Barnard, who will also shortly be seen on the big screen in Trap For Cinderella.
Winsone said of the role: “I’m incredibly excited to be working with Sky – I can’t wait to start filming and it’s a real honour to be bringing such an epic adventure story to life.”
The Moonfleet cast also includes Omid Djalili as diamond merchant Aldobrand, Mad Dogs star Ben Chaplin as the town’s anti-smuggling Magistrate, Inbetweeners actor Martin Trenaman, Silent Witness‘s Lorcan Cranitch, Spooks star Anthony Ofoegbu and newcomer Sophie Cookson.
The script has been penned by Life on Mars writer Ashley Pharoah and shooting on the project will begin in Dublin this summer. The show will air exclusively on Sky1 HD later this year.
