WWE star Ronda Rousey has joined the forthcoming third season of emergency services drama 9-1-1.

The fighter and actress will play Lena Bosko, a character described as a stoic and fearless member of the Los Angeles Fire Department Station 136, who leaps into action to save lives when a disaster hits.

The casting news comes as a trailer for the new season was launched earlier this week, showing scenes of a tsunami engulfing Santa Monica (see below).

Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, 9-1-1 explores the high-pressure experiences of police officers, firefighters and dispatchers as they are forced to deal with a variety of emergency situations in LA, while juggling complicated personal lives.

The ensemble series stars Angela Bassett, Peter Krause and Jennifer Love Hewitt, with Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Rockmond Dunbar and Ryan Guzman in series regular roles.

Olympic Judo medallist Rousey is currently signed to the WWE where she performs weekly on Monday Night Raw. As an actor, she was most recently seen in action thriller Mile 22 opposite Mark Wahlberg.

The third season of 9-1-1 will premiere on Monday, September 23 in the US, with a UK debut due to follow soon after on Sky.
