Russ Abbot to play Tommy Cooper for BBC drama

RUSS Abbot is to play Tommy Cooper in a new BBC Radio 3 drama.
Glass Chair Chair Glass will imagine what would have happened if the comedian and magician had met absurdist playwright Eugene Ionesco.
The 90 minute play will be broadcast on September 18 at 9.30pm and will see Abbot lining up alongside Dame Harriet Walter and Allan Corduner, as Ionesco.
Annie Caulfield, who is best known for the radio drama The Von Trapps and Me, has written the script.
She said that her screenplay is based on a “showbusiness rumour” of a meeting that took place between Cooper and Ionesco, which she has subsequently imagined took place in Paris in 1975.
Comedian Abbot enjoyed BBC success in the long-running comedy Last of the Summer Wine. which ended last year, and has a number of West End hits to his name, including Oliver! and The Producers.
He is also widely remembered for his self-titled comedy series which ran during the 1980s and 90s.
