Ruth Wilson joins James McAvoy in BBC's His Dark Materials adaptation

Saving Mr Banks

Story by Jack Foley

RUTH Wilson, star of hit drama series The Affair as well as films such as Saving Mr Banks, has joined the cast of the BBC’s adaptation of His Dark Materials.

The actress will be starring as protagonist Marisa Coulter, a former lover of Lord Asriel (played by James McAvoy), according to Deadline.

Coulter is one of the main characters in Philip Pullman’s trilogy. She is described as a beautiful 35-year-old in the third novel, The Amber Spyglass.

Her relationship with main character Lyra (Dafne Keen) – an orphan who travels to a parallel universe – is one of the main strands of the story.

In further casting news, Clarke Peters, of The Wire fame, has also signed up to play the master who raises Asriel’s curious child. And Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda has been cast as balloonist and adventurer Lee Scoresby.

His Dark Materials is reportedly being planned as a five-series, 40-episode juggernaut, with its first series based on Pullman’s first instalment of the trilogy, Northern Lights.

The first run will be comprised of eight episodes.
