Screen Actors Guild Awards: Breaking Bad dominates TV nominees

Breaking Bad

Story by Jack Foley

BREAKING Bad leads the TV field at the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards with four nominations.

The crime drama, which concluded this year, secured nominations for Bryan Cranston as best actor, Anna Gunn as best actress, best ensemble and best stunts.

Comedy hits 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family each scored three nominations, as did dramas Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones and Homeland.

While Arrested Development, Downton Abbey, Veep and mini-series Behind The Candelabra, Downton Abbey and Top of the Lake got two nominations each.

Downton‘s two nods included best ensemble and best actress, for Dame Maggie Smith, while Liberace drama Behind The Candelabra saw both of its leading men, Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, shortlisted for best actor in a TV movie or mini-series. Ironically, the film couldn’t get a cinema release in the US because of its subject matter.

Another British star to get shortlisted was Helena Bonham Carter for her performance in the TV movie Burton And Taylor.

Of the TV channels, HBO landed a leading 13 nominations, with AMC pulling in five nods.

Netflix, however, followed its breakthrough Emmy nominations and awards with three SAG nominations, including one for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for Kevin Spacey in House of Cards.

The awards will be handed out at a ceremony in Los Angeles on January 18, 2014.
