Sean Bean lands Game of Thrones lead
Story by Jack Foley
SEAN Bean has landed the lead role in HBO’s Game of Thrones, an adaptation of the fantasy book series by George RR Martin.
Bean will play Lord Eddard “Ned” Stark, who becomes closest adviser to King Robert, a role tipped for Britain’s Mark Addy, while Kit Harrington will play Jon Snow, Bean’s bastard son.
Harry Lloyd, meanwhile, has joined the cast as Viserys, a powerless ruler who seeks to marry off his sister to a powerful king, and Jack Gleeson will play Joffrey, King Robert’s son.
The Game of Thrones books follow a battle between seven kingdoms and two ruling families for control of the Iron Throne, the possession of which ensures survival through an approaching 40-year winter.
Tom McCarthy is directing from a screenplay by David Benioff.
Thrones marks the latest fantasy-style production for Bean following his appearances in The Lord of the Rings and Troy. The British actor has also recently just wrapped shooting on Percy Jackson & the Olympians, which is due for release next year.
The Sharpe star also has Black Death, a supernatural thriller set during England’s first bubonic plague, in post production.
