SHAILENE Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz have officially signed up to return to the award-winning drama Big Little Lies for its forthcoming second season.

The trio will reprise their roles as Jane Chapman, Renata Klein and Bonnie Carlson, respectively.

The delay in confirming their return came as a result of the fact that no one had anticipated a sophomore run for the show going into the first season, so no deals beyond that one season had been struck.

It has meant that HBO has had to enter into negotiations with each of its cast members to tempt them back.

The exact plot details of Season 2 remain a mystery but the new run of episodes will explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and the vicious ferocity of sound parenting.

Hence, relationships will fray, loyalties will erode and the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.

The trio join returning stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman as well as high-profile new addition Meryl Streep, who will become a series regular as Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgard) mother, Mary Louise Wright.

Casting is also underway for Bonnie’s father, according to The Hollywood Reporter, among other new roles for season two.

Award winner Skarsgard is also expected to return in some capacity despite Perry’s fate in season one.

Andrea Arnold is directing the second season, with season one helmer Jean-Marc Vallée, who helmed every season one episode, only back as an executive producer.

Writer/showrunner David E. Kelley, who was attached to Big Little Lies when it was a film set to star Kidman and Witherspoon, will again write all seven episodes partially based on a story by Liane Moriarty.
