GRITTY cop drama Southland has been renewed for a fifth season.

Cable network TNT announced on Friday (May 4, 2012) that the critically acclaimed show will return in February 2013 with 10 original episodes.

Michael Wright, TNT, TBS and TCM president and head of programming, said in a statement: “We are very proud of Southland and grateful to everyone involved in the series, including executive producers John Wells, Chris Chulack and Jonathan Lisco; creator Ann Biderman; and our partners at Warner Bros. Television.

“We look forward to going deeper into the lives of Southland’s extraordinary characters and the streets they struggle to keep safe next year.”

Southland stars Michael Cudlitz, Regina King, Ben McKenzie and Shawn Hatosy and was originally aired on NBC before being axed and saved by TNT, where it has been a strong ratings performer.

It airs in the UK on More4 where its fourth season is due to return sometime this year, featuring multi-episode guest turns from Lucy Liu and Dorian Missick as well as Lou Diamond Phillips, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Marla Gibbs and C. Thomas Howell.
