Southland returning to US TV screens in January 2011

Story by Jack Foley

COP drama Southland was one of THE TV events of the past 12 months in the UK, especially as More4 decided to screen seasons 1 and 2 back to back to catch up with America.

The good news is that the show is returning… and what’s more, there will be 10 episodes. It will also debut in the US on January 4, 2011, with an explosive season opener to set things in motion.

Entertainment Weekly has revealed the following about the show…

The season opener will feature a bank robbery as well as a final shot that has big repercussions for the future of one character.

Michael Cudlitz’s John will also continue to deal with his recurring back problem and must decide whether he has turned into a drug addict as his painkillers have less and less effect on his injury.

He will also come to lean on his partner – Ben McKenzie’s Ben – more and their relationship will develop into more of a bro-mance, rather than the tutor/mentor approach of the first two seasons.

Cudlitz also revealed that the effects of John’s battle will lead to a few dark twists and that his “bad days are going to start outweighing the good days”.

Episode two, meanwhile, promises to be a big one for Shawn Hatosey, which will find his character Sammy once again attempting to help a troubled youth. The episode is called Punching Water.

It is not yet known when the new Southland episodes will air on UK TV – but we now have a renewed sense of anticipation surrounding the future of this quality series.
