Spartacus: Blood & Sand - Preview

Spartacus: Blood And Sand

Preview by Jack Foley

NOT for the faint-hearted, the controversial Spartacus: Blood and Sand brings to life the bloody world of gladiators as the Roman Republic’s most brutal fighters clash in the ultimate arena, and depicts one of history’s most violent eras.

Bravo will be showing the epic series in the UK from Tuesday, May 25, at 10pm and its sure to set temperatures rising and the complaints line ringing vibrantly through the night!

Betrayed by the Romans, forced into slavery and reborn as a gladiator, Spartacus (played by rugged UK-born actor Andy Whitfield) is a rebellious soldier in the Roman Auxiliary who is taken prisoner and torn away from the woman he loves.

Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) is cast as Lucretia, who along with her husband Batiatus, played by British actor John Hannah (The Mummy, Rebus, Four Weddings and a Funeral), own the slave Spartacus and the gladiator camp.

The former soldier is then condemned to the ways of the arena fighter – under the brutal hand of trainer Doctore, played by Peter Mensah (300, Avatar) – where blood and death are primetime entertainment, and treachery, corruption and sexual allure will test him to the limit.

An unsparing and stylised 13-episode action series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand has been lauded by the critics for its reworking of the story of the rebellious warrior slave using cutting-edge digital technology and CGI graphics reminiscent of fellow genre blockbusters 300 and Sin City.

The series, filmed entirely in New Zealand, won a second season order before the premiere episode had even aired.

This visceral dramatisation scored record audiences upon its US premiere in January, and teams up a multi-talented unit responsible for some of film and TV’s biggest action hits, including executive producers Sam Raimi (Spider-Man), Rob Tapert (The Grudge, Xena: Warrior Princess), Joshua Donen (Drag Me to Hell) and head writer and showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (Smallville, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
