Stephen Root joins Boardwalk Empire
Story by Jack Foley
CHARACTER actor Stephen Root has joined the third season of Boardwalk Empire.
The actor will take on the recurring role of Gaston Means, a forger, swindler and murder suspect who became a Special Investigator for the United States Department of Justice under Attorney General Harry Daugherty (Christopher McDonald).
The news comes a week after Bobby Cannavale joined the period drama as Gyp Rosetti, a charming but ruthless gangster who challenges Nucky (Steve Buscemi).
The sudden influx of new cast regulars on Boardwalk is largely in response to the departure of several characters throughout the show’s sophomore run.
Michael Pitt’s Jimmy Darmody was killed off at the end of the season, while Dabney Coleman’s Commodore and Aleksa Palladino’s Angela Darmody had also met their respective makers.
In addition, the series has opted not to renew its option on Paz de la Huerta, with new mom Lucy likely also joining the list of Boardwalk’s departing characters.
Root has previously worked with HBO on True Blood, where he guest starred as Eddie. He has also appeared in Timothy Olyphant’s Justified.
