Steven Spielberg musical greenlit for US TV
Story by Jack Foley
A NEW musical TV programme from Steven Spielberg has been picked up by NBC in America.
Smash is based on an idea by Spielberg, who also has Terra Nova and Falling Skies to produce, and will take the form of an hour-long musical series.
It will follow a group of characters who come together to put on a Broadway musical.
The “making of” series has doubtless been inspired by the success of Fox’s Glee, which could well pave the way for a series of similarly themed musical backdrop shows.
Spielberg will also executive produce Smash, which has been written for the small screen by playwright and TV producer Theresa Rebeck. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (of Hairspray fame) will serve as the show’s songwriters, and will deliver original material as part of their remit.
Michael Mayer, director of Broadway’s Spring Awakening and Green Day musical American Idiot, is currently in negotiations to direct.
