Tandoori Nights: Series 1 and 2 - Preview

Tandoori Nights

Preview by Jack Foley

FIRST broadcast in 1985, and on DVD for the first time omn October 24, 2016, Tandoori Nights is a spicy, ground-breaking Channel 4 comedy about an embattled curry house owner (Saeed Jaffrey – My Beautiful Laundrette, Gandhi) and his wayward family.

Jimmy Sharma (Jaffrey) makes a comfortable living running an upscale Indian restaurant, The Jewel in the Crown, until one of his ex-waiters opens a rival, cheaper outlet right across the street.

Then there’s his family predicament – Jimmy is both supported and given the run-around by his feisty daughters Asha (Rita Wolf – Coronation Street) and ‘Bubbly’ (Shelley King – The Bill), who in turn are watched over by a domineering Gran (Zohra Sehgal – Bend it Like Beckham).

Created by prolific writer Farrukh Dhondy, the series takes a wry look at provocative issues around sexual and racial equality, including mixed-race relationships, politicised Asian women and grasping business methods.
