The Virtues - DVD Preview

The Virtues

Preview by Jack Foley

FROM multi-award winning writer Shane Meadows and starring BAFTA winner Stephen Graham (This is England, ’86, ’88, ’90, Boardwalk Empire, Taboo) comes the critically-acclaimed drama, The Virtues, out on DVD on 12th August and available now on Digital Download.

Written by Shane Meadows and Jack Thorne (This is England, ’86, ’88, ’90, National Treasure), The Virtues is directed by Meadows and produced by Mark Herbert (This Is England, ’86, ’88, ’90) and Nickie Sault (This is England 86, 88, 90).

Also starring Helen Behan (This is England,‘86, ‘88, ‘90), Niamh Algar (Without Name, The Bisexual, Pure), Frank Laverty (Michael Collins, Trouble in Paradise), Mark O’Halloran (Adam & Paul) and Liam Carney (Gangs Of New York, Braveheart), this powerful, bold drama tackles themes of repressed memory, apocalyptic revenge and the hope of redemption.

It’s an extraordinary story with unforgettable characters and a tender love story which is complex and at times dark – but always shot through with heart and a large dose of humour.

The music is by multi-award winning British composer and recording artist, PJ Harvey. Harvey’s most recent works include scores for Peaky Blinders and stage productions for Ian Rickson (The Nest, Electra, The Goat) and Ivo Van Hove (All About Eve).

Graham stars as Joseph, a moral yet troubled man who’s lost everything he ever held dear. Joseph finds himself compelled to travel to Ireland to confront the demons that continue to haunt him from a childhood spent in the care system, a journey that will have savage and brutal consequences.

His path soon crosses with that of Dinah, played by Niamh Algar. She’s fiery and more than able to stand up for herself, but like Joseph she’s also deeply guarded, holding close a secret she’s hiding from all those around her.

Joseph and Dinah’s lives spiral intensely in and out of control as they both try to ground themselves, torn between morality and self-indulgence, defined by drug-induced self-destruction, traumatised by their own harrowing histories, and yet enlightened by their dual faith in companionship.

Survival instincts kick in as they pave their way to an unnerving and tormented future. Neither of them thought their lives would ever tangle into a delicate love story.

The Virtues is out on DVD on August 12, 2019.
