BRITISH actor Tom Riley is to play a young Leonardo da Vinci in a new series entitled Da Vinci’s Demons.

The historical fantasy drama marks a co-production between BBC Worldwide and Starz – the channel behind Spartacus – and is being labeled as the “untold story” of da Vinci during his turbulent youth in Renaissance Florence.

David S. Goyer, who has co-written the series, told the Hollywood Reporter that Riley fit the bill perfectly to play the young painter.

“Given that da Vinci was the model for the ‘Renaissance Man,’ these were incredibly large shoes to fill,” he explained.

“Leonardo had to be smart, witty and incredibly confident – without coming across as arrogant. He also had to be tormented, because, as a true visionary and polymath, he was ostracized for his ideas as much as he was celebrated. As soon as Tom finished his audition, we knew we had found our man.”

Riley is previously best known for acclaimed performances in ITV medical drama Monroe alongside James C Nesbitt and the remake of Bouquet of Barbed Wire.

He’s also a regular at London’s Royal Court Theatre.

The project is set to premiere with eight episodes in 2013.

Goyer’s past work includes, most notably, contributing to the screenplays for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight
