US version of The Thick of It heading for HBO

The Thick of It

Story by Jack Foley

A US version of Armando Iannucci’s political satire The Thick of It has been commissioned by US cable network HBO.

Entitled Veep, the show will feature former Seinfeld actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a newly-elected US Vice President named Selina Meyer. The name of the show reflects the nickname for her position.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will follow former Senator Meyer as she discovers the job is nothing like she expected.

Louis-Dreyfus will be joined by Anna Chlumsky (of 1991 film My Girl fame) as Meyer’s chief of staff, and Arrested Development actor Tony Hale as the Vice President’s right-hand man.

Iannucci will serve as director and executive producer.

Filming is due to commence in the autumn in time for a US broadcast next year.

In the meantime, Iannucci is currently completing the fourth series of the UK version of the show, which won the Bafta for best situation comedy last year.
