FANS of The Vampire Dairies have been told to expect “surprises, tragedies, new villains, break-ups, make-ups, romance and scandal” in the upcoming fourth season.

Writer/producer Julie Plec dropped the ‘revelations’ on Twitter as she looks to get fans excited about the prospect of new episodes featuring Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder.

But in amongst all the mayhem, Plec also added there would be “small pockets of happiness for all… and maybe some fun”.

The Vampire Diaries will return to The CW on Thursday, October 11 in the US and is shown on ITV2 in the UK, although no air date for the fourth season has yet been set.

Plec’s Tweets follow recent comments made by another of the show’s stars, Candice Accola (aka Caroline), who said that she wants to see the show’s characters reach their “breaking point[s]”.

“I am personally excited to see… what everyone’s breaking point is going to be,” she explained. “Because at this point, everyone has really had to keep it together – what is gonna be the straw that starts to break the camel’s back?”
