VANESSA Redgrave is to play a psychiatrist in new ABC series The Black Box.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series revolves around Elizabeth Black, played by fellow Brit and Flight star Kelly Reilly, a famed neuro-scientist who seems to have it all but struggles with mental illness.

Her condition is one of many secrets she keeps from her fiancé and her family.

Six-time Oscar nominee Redgrave will play Dr. Hartramph, Elizabeth’s psychiatrist and the only one who knows all of her secrets.

The Black Box has been picked up straight to series by ABC after Amy Holden Jones’ script proved too good to resist. Simon Curtis, who recently helmed My Week With Marilyn, is on board to direct.

The 13-episode series is due to air in the US in January 2014.

Redgrave is no stranger to TV having been seen on Call The Midwife, Political Animals and a recurring role in FX’s Nip/Tuck.

She will next be seen on the big screen in Lee Daniels’ The Butler and can currently be seen in London’s West End in Mark Rylance’s adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing alongside James Earl Jones.
