Veep to end after seventh season

Veep: The Complete Third Season

Story by Jack Foley

Award-winning political comedy Veep is to end after its seventh season.

The news was broken by The Hollywood Reporter following a conversation with both the show’s star, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and executive producer David Mandel.

Louis-Dreyfus, who plays the US vice president of the show’s title, told the trade magazine: “It became clear that this season should be the last season. We don’t want to repeat ourselves or wear out our welcome. The story has a finality to it that feels end-of-series.”

Veep was created by Armando Iannucci as an American counterpart to his equally well received BBC series, The Thick of It, which focused on the UK Parliament.

The US show started as a show about a presidential hopeful, Selina Meyer, who takes the vice president position when offered.

Over the course of its run, Meyer has won the presidency, lost it, and then found herself floundering [somewhat] in a post-presidential world, before contemplating whether it’s a good idea or not to run for president again (as part of the sixth season finale).

Executive producer Mandel, who took over running Veep in season five, noted that the show was never held back by its title, and was always driven by story and, what he described as a fearless sense of moving forward.

He maintained that the final 10 episodes would follow a similar path, continuing the show’s current trend for surprising its audience while bringing it to a natural conclusion.

He added that there will be a finality to Selina’s journey in season seven.

“If we needed five more [episodes], everybody was open to five more,” he added. But it never came to that.

“I’m so fucking excited for what we’ve got on the board and for fans to see what we’ve cooked up,” he added.

Shooting for the final season will begin October 16 and will be a bittersweet experience for all concerned.

Veep remains one of the best reviewed and heavily awarded comedy shows of all-time. Louis-Dreyfus has won no less than five consecutive Emmys for outstanding lead actress and is up for a sixth this year, while the show has been nominated for best series six consecutive seasons, winning the last two in a row.
