Westworld renewed for third season by HBO

Westworld Season 2

Story by Jack Foley

HBO has renewed Westworld for a third season.

The news, while hardly surprising given the popularity of the critical darling, will still be a reassurance to fans who have so many questions left to answer about the show as it unfolds its sophomore season.

However, what has yet to be determined is just when season three will return given that Warner Bros. Television project took more than a year between seasons one and two so that showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan could complete writing the complex sophomore run.

In announcing the news in a statement, HBO programming president Casey Bloys said: “It’s been an extraordinary pleasure to work with the exceptionally talented Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as their gifted cast and crew.

“From the inspired storytelling to the incredible visuals, we are so excited to see where the next chapter will take us.”

HBO has a lot riding on the continued success of Westworld, given that it is widely considered to be the heir apparent to Game of Thrones, which concludes next year.

The premium cabler is, however, developing multiple Game of Thrones offshoots. But Bloys has remained adamant that none will premiere until well after the final season of the flagship, which will hit screens sometime in 2019.

HBO’s remaining drama roster includes season two of Big Little Lies, a third run of anthology True Detective, the second season of David Simon’s porn drama The Deuce, Marti Noxon’s Sharp Objects and Nicole Kidman and David E. Kelley’s The Undoing.

On the pilot side, the network is reteaming with Damon Lindelof for Watchmen and also has Euphoria.
