2018 Tony Award nominations announced

NOMINATIONS for the 2018 Tony Awards have been announced and the National Theatre’s production of Angels in Ameria has broken the record for the most Tony Awards nominations for a play in Broadway history.

As well as Angels in America (with 11 nominations, among them Best Revival of a Play, Best Original Score Written for the Theatre, Scenic Design of a Play and Costume Design of a Play), other British productions recognised in several categories include Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Farinelli and the King, Travesties and The Children.

British actors dominated the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play with Andrew Garfield (Angels in America), Tom Hollander (Travesties), Jamie Parker (Harry Potter) and Mark Rylance (Farinelli and the King) pitted against Denzel Washington (The Iceman Cometh) for the honour.

Similarly, the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play finds Noma Dumezweni (Harry Potter), Susan Brown (Angels in America), Deborah Findlay (The Children) and Denise Gough (Angels in America) up against Laurie Metcalf (Three Tall Women).

This year, Chita Rivera and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber will receive Special Tony Awards for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre; while Special Tony Awards will go to John Leguizamo and Bruce Springsteen.

The 72nd Annual Tony Awards will be held on June 10, 2018 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Hosts will be Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles.
