A Birthday Whirligig for Shakespeare's Globe

Theatre news

ON SUNDAY, April 21, 2013, Shakespeare’s Globe will celebrate Shakespeare’s Birthday with its very first Birthday Whirligig, an eclectic evening of ‘magical and musical’ performance courtesy of a sparkling line-up of performers.

The Magic Numbers, whose debut album was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and whose recent single All I Believe In was featured on the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack, will be headlining the event.

Next on the bill is multi-talented singer/songwriter/actor/poet Johnny Flynn, who has three critically-acclaimed albums to his name, played Viola in last year’s Globe hit Twelfth Night with Mark Rylance, and was nominated for an Olivier Award for his appearance in Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem.

Other acts include magician/comedian Piff the Magic Dragon, illusionists Barry and Stuart and Chris Cox, ‘the mind-reader who can’t read minds’.

This will be a ticketed event, with prices ranging from £10 (for standing tickets) to £30. It will run from 7pm to 9.30pm.

The Globe will also be hosting its usual afternoon of free family events that same day, throwing open its doors for a birthday celebration inspired by Prospero, Shakespeare’s greatest magician. There will be bubbling cauldrons, card trickery and magical masterclasses, ahead of the official opening of the 2013 theatre season, Season of Plenty, with The Tempest on Tuesday, April 23 April.

Activities include:

A ‘magic school’ workshop for children aged six and up.

Hourly performances of supernatural scenes from Shakespeare.

The chance to perform onstage with the Globe’s actors.

‘Eyeball pies’ and other magical fare.

Witches and wizards on stilts.

The day will be a free event and there is no need to book – just turn up and join the party any time between midday and 4.30pm. Activities will finish at 5pm.
