A Midsummer Night's Dream - 295 Regent Street
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
THEATRE Delicatessen is presenting a site specific production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 295 Regent Street, a derelict space in the heart of the West End – from January 29 to March 2, 2008.
Four mortal lovers become embroiled in a violent argument between the Fairy King and Queen in a dark and threatening forest when they flee the ruined city of Athens.
In another part of the wood, the malevolent spirit of Oberon’s Puck wreaks destruction and confusion on hapless mechanicals, and fairies delight as voyeurs upon this disjointed world.
In this ‘anarchic retelling’ of one of Shakespeare’s most prophetic plays Theatre Delicatessen, a new company committed to finding new spaces to perform new and classical work, brings the struggle for survival to the fore.
Frances Loy directs a cast that includes Giovanni Bienne, Olivia Brown, Josh Cass, Dan Crow, Robert Curtis, Holly Goss, Mark Knightly, Nigel Mattison, Esther McAuley, Matthew Pearson, Bethany Webb and Jennifer Milor Wren. Design is by Harry Scott.
295 Regent Street, provided by The Property Merchant Group, conceals a disused and gutted space. Juxtaposed against its corporate, modern surroundings, the crumbling brick work and atmosphere of the performance space will enhance the production.
Time: 7.30pm.
