THE YOUNG Vic’s new season begins with Thomas Babe’s psychological drama, A Prayer for My Daughter, which runs in the main house from February 6 (previews from January 31) until March 15, 2008.

In a grubby police office in downtown New York, two cops and two crooks battle with wits and fists to uncover the truth about a hideous murder. While in Vietnam, America is locked in a war she shouldn’t have started.

Dominic Hill directs a cast that includes Matthew Marsh (Glengarry Glen Ross, Copenhagen, Spooks, The Commander); Corey Johnson (The Bourne Ultimatum, Black Hawk Down, United 93, Band of Brothers, Frost/Nixon); Sean Chapman (A Mighty Heart, Joy Division, Gangster No.1, Angels in America); and Colin Morgan (Vernon God Little, All About My Mother, Doctor Who).

A Prayer for My Daughter is designed by Giles Cadle, with lighting by Bruno Poet, music by Dan Jones and casting by Ginny Schiller.

American playwright Thomas Babe, who died in the year 2000 at the age of 59, was fascinated by the concept of the traditional hero figure – and the reality behind it. His work often featured strained family relationships, specifically focusing on fathers and daughters, love and individual rights – themes that come together in A Prayer for My Daughter which was written in 1977.

His other plays include Rebel Women, Fathers and Sons, Taken in Marriage, When We Were Very Young, Carrying School Children and Demon Wine.

A Prayer for My Daughter premiered at New York’s Public Theater and London’s Royal Court Theatre in the late 1970s. It has not been seen in the capital since.

Tickets: £22.50, previews £20, concessions £5 off and half-price mid-week matinees.
