Aidan Turner to make W/E debut in Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

FOLLOWING the successful run of Labour of Love, the Michael Grandage Company return to the Noel Coward Theatre with two productions, both revivals – John Logan’s Red, starring Alfred Molina and Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore, starring Poldark‘s Aidan Turner.

Red, which runs from May 4 to July 28, 2018, will be directed by MGC Artistic Director Michael Grandage, who directed the play’s world premiere at the Donmar Warehouse in 2009. That production went on to win six Tony Awards, including Best Play.

Award-winning stage and screen actor Alfred Molina will reprise his critically acclaimed performance as the American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. He will be joined by Alfred Enoch of US television drama series How to Get Away With Murder as his assistant Ken.

Under the watchful gaze of his young assistant, and the threatening presence of a new generation of artists, Mark Rothko takes on his greatest challenge yet: to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.

Red reunites John Logan and Michael Grandage following Peter and Alice with Judi Dench and Ben Whishaw which formed part of MGC’s inaugural season in the West End in 2013, and their feature film Genius.

Described as an hilarious and acute observation of violence in contemporary culture, The Lieutenant of Inishmore is also directed by Michael Grandage and runs from June 23 to September 8, 2018.

Who knocked Mad Padraic’s cat over on a lonely road on the island of Inishmore and was it an accident? He’ll want to know when he gets back from a stint of torture and chip-shop bombing in Northern Ireland: he loves that cat more than life itself.

Aidan Turner, best known for playing the title role in the BBC series Poldark, will make his West End debut playing Mad Padraic, a terrorist deemed too violent to be a member of the IRA.

The Lieutenant of Inishmore follows Michael Grandage’s award-winning production of McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan in 2013.

The Lieutenant of Inishmore is suitable for ages 16+.

Also at the Noel Coward Theatre: the West End transfer of Bob Dylan’s and Conor McPherson’s Girl from the North Country (December 29, 2017 to March 24, 2018).
