An Inspector Calls closes ahead of schedule

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

STEPHEN Daldry’s multi award-winning adaptation of JB Priestley’s classic thriller, An Inspector Calls, will close at Wyndham’s Theatre one week earlier than originally scheduled – on March 13, 2010.

It makes way for Avenue Q which in turn closes at the Gielgud Theatre on March 13, 2010, to make way for the Broadway transfer of James Rado and Gerome Ragni’s 1967 rock musical Hair, which opens on April 14, 2010 (previews from April 1).

An Inspector Calls, which completes its run at the Novello Theatre on November 14, 2009, will transfer to Wyndham’s Theatre where it begins performances on December 3. A three-month run is planned.

The move was made possible by the early closure of The Shawshank Redemption, which was originally booking at Wyndham’s Theatre until February 14, 2010, but will now close on November 29, 2009.

The story begins with the mysterious Inspector Goole arriving unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home. Their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into their involvement in the death of a young woman whom each of them in turn has exploited.

Winner of 19 major awards, including three Oliviers and four Tonys, An Inspector Calls opened at the National Theatre in 1992, before transferring to the West End for two years. An extensive international tour, that included Australia and Broadway, followed. The last West End production ran for eight years. There have also been a number of major UK tours.

Daldry’s other work includes Billy Elliot (stage and screen), and the films The Hours and The Reader. He received Oscar nominations for all three.

The Novello production will be designed by Ian MacNeil, with lighting by Rick Fisher and music by Stephen Warbeck. Casting has not yet been announced.
