Stephen Sondheim

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

PRIMAVERA Productions in association with Jermyn Street Theatre is presenting Stephen Sondheim’s 1964 musical Anyone Can Whistle to mark the composer’s 80th birthday – from March 10 to April 17, 2010.

In a bankrupt town in a recession-hit country, the citizens are rebelling against the corrupt Mayoress Cora Hooper, who comes up with a devious plan to reverse her fortunes and keep the town under control.

However, she reckons without the feisty young Fay Apple and the mysterious stranger Hapgood, who has his own plans for the town and the people who live there…

Described as a funny, daring and imaginative musical, Anyone Can Whistle includes the songs There Won’t Be Trumpets, Everybody Says Don’t, With So Little To Be Sure Of and the title song.

Anyone Can Whistle is directed by Tom Littler, whose previous work includes Sondheim’s Saturday Night, which was also staged at Jermyn Street Theatre.
