Austen's Women - Leicester Square Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
AUSTEN’S Women, written and performed by Rebecca Vaughan, receives its London premiere at Leicester Square Theatre, where it runs from Tuesday, April 20 to Saturday, May 9, 2010.
Channelling the voices of fourteen female characters, and using nothing but the words of Austen herself, this bold revisiting highlights the pertinent feministic themes in Austen’s work.
Baring the souls of Emma Woodhouse, Lizzy Bennet, Mrs Norris, Miss Bates and many more, the women speak volumes for their sex and standing, constrained by the stringent societal code of their time proving that Austen still resonates within modern society.
Jane Austen is reconstructed within her “two inches of ivory”.
Jane Austen (1775-1817) wrote six novels including Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815), and is loved by millions for her wit and biting social commentary. She is published in over 100 languages.
As well as Austen’s Women, Vaughan has appeared on stage in The Picture of Dorian Gray, Room 24, Havisham, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Treasure Island.
Austen’s Women is directed and produced by Guy Masterson, whose previous directing credits include the Olivier Award-winning Morecambe, Scaramouche Jones, Reasonable Doubt, The Eagle Dances, The Mistress, Follow Me, The Odd Couple, Cooking with Puccini and Twelve Angry Men.
