Avenue Q transfers to Wyndham's Theatre

Lizzie Guilfoyle

FOLLOWING a successful run at the Gielgud Theatre, its second West End home, the offbeat musical Avenue Q will transfer to Wyndham’s Theatre, where it begins performances on March 19, 2010.

Described as “Pant Wettingly Funny”, Avenue Q ingeniously combines a cast of humans and puppets who tackle subjects such as dating, racism, internet porn, being gay and finding your purpose in life.

Major cast changes are also afoot with Paul Spicer (Notes from New York, Taboo, Fame) taking over from Daniel Boys as Princeton/Rod; and Jacqueline Tate (Phantom of the Opera) taking on Christmas Eve; while award-winning Delroy Atkinson, who is currently starring in Jihad! The Musical at Jermyn Street Theatre, returns as Gary.

Avenue Q is produced in London by Cameron Mackintosh, Kevin McCollum, Robyn Goodman, Jeffrey Seller, Vineyard Theatre and The New Group.

Speaking about the musical which has been described as “Sesame Street meets South Park”, Mackintosh said: “Little did I think when I fell in love with Avenue Q in New York, that it would come to London in one of my theatres. It is just fabulous that audiences are still hysterical with laughter into our fifth year, with its witty and timely songs being as pertinent as ever.”

Directed by Jason Moore, Avenue Q has music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, and book by Jeff Whitty, based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx. The puppets were conceived and designed by Rick Lyon.
