Beyond the Pale - Southwark Playhouse
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
THE LONDON Quest Company is presenting Beyond the Pale, a unique interactive theatre piece, at Southwark Playhouse – from March 30 to April 17, 2010.
Drawing on Southwark’s history as a lawless hinterland outside London’s city limits, Beyond the Pale imagines an alternative present where civilisation clashes with the barbarians.
Audience members will meet characters from all strata of society but rather than simply watching events unfold, they will take a hands on role in the drama, manipulating the actors and shaping their actions.
Beyond the Pale is devised and directed by Jamie Harper and Andrew Pawlby.
Harper is Associate Director at the Rose Theatre in Kingston. His recent directing credits include A Real Humane Person Who Cares and All That (Arcola Theatre); Invisible Storms (Cock Tavern Theatre); The Six-Days World (Finborough Theatre); The Things Good Men Do (Old Red Lion/Lyric Hammersmith); The Infant (Old Red Lion/Edinburgh); A Lie of the Mind (BAC) and Left, an improvised play for BBC Radio 4.
Pawlby is Artistic Director of the London Quest Company. His work involves the creation of interactive theatre games and mixed media events. His recent site responsive theatre projects include The White Feathers (Time Out, Greenwich) Identity (Wellcome Trust, Euston), Hogarth’s Droogs (McKinsey and Company, Soho), and The Javelin Train (Bel, Thames Bankside.)
The cast of Beyond the Pale includes Nadia Albina, Richard Atwill, Janet Emily Bruce, Padma Damodaran, Georgia Dolenz, Susannah Fiore, Henriikka Kemppi, Ciaran McConville, Simon Nicholas, Benjamin Peters, James Powell, Luanna Priestman, Kyle Riley, Tiffany Wood and Simon Yadoo.
