Cabaret - Will Young stars at the Savoy

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

WILL Young (as the Emcee) will make his West End debut in Rufus Norris’ much anticipated re-imagining of his double Olivier-award winning production of Cabaret, which opens at the Savoy Theatre on October 3, 2012 following a four-week national tour.

Based on the stories of Christopher Isherwood and the play by John Van Druten, this Kander and Ebb musical is a story of pre-war sexual decadence and eroticism set in 1930s Berlin, where young Sally Bowles is a singer at the Kit Kat Klub…..

Songs include Willkommen, Two Ladies, Sitting Pretty, If You Could See Her and, of course, the title song itself.

The production will be choreographed by Javier de Frutos. Further casting has yet to be announced.

Since winning the inaugural series of Pop Idol in 2002, Will Young has been one of the UK’s most popular and successful music artists, selling over nine million albums. He holds the record for the fastest selling debut single in British chart history, while his recent Platinum selling album, Echoes, went straight to number one in the charts.

As well as a phenomenal career in music, he has acted alongside Dame Judi Dench in the film Mrs Henderson Presents and made his professional theatre debut in Noel Coward’s The Vortex at the Manchester Royal Exchange.

Speaking about his new role, Young said: “I am very excited about the challenge of choosing Cabaret as my first musical theatre role. The role of the Emcee is a part I have wanted to play since before I started training at Arts Education in Chiswick when I first moved to London. With Rufus and Javier I couldn’t wish for better people to be surrounded by.”

Since its Broadway premiere in 1966 and the famous movie version with Liza Minnelli and Oscar winner Joel Grey, Cabaret has won an incredible number of stage and screen awards including eight Oscar’s, seven BAFTA’s and 13 Tony’s.

Norris’ Olivier Award-winning production originally opened at the West End’s Lyric Theatre in October 2006 with James Dreyfus as the Emcee and Anna Maxwell Martin as Sally. Bill Kenwright subsequently produced a 2008/09 UK tour which starred Samantha Barks and Wayne Sleep.

The pre-West End tour of Cabaret will visit Southampton, Nottingham, Norwich and Salford.

The Sunshine Boys continues at the Savoy Theatre until July 28, 2012.
