Call Me Merman - Tabard Theatre
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
HIDDEN Pearl Productions in association with the Tabard Theatre is presenting Rosemary Ashe in Call me Merman. A tribute to Ethel Merman, the legendary first lady of the musical comedy stage, it runs from November 19 to November 24, 2012.
Belting out her songs with merry abandon, Merman helped electrify the Broadway musical and Call Me Merman visits all of the Broadway star’s biggest shows – from the Gershwins’ Girl Crazy in 1931, which made her a star overnight, through to Styne and Sondheim’s Gypsy in the 1960s.
Accompanied by her Musical Director, Paul Knight, Ashe creates a striking and often moving interpretation of Merman’s back catalogue.
Ashe’s numerous theatre roles include Carlotta in the original London cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty’s Theatre), Felicia Gabriel in The Witches of Eastwick (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane), Miss Andrew in the original London cast of Mary Poppins, Madame Thenardier in Les Misérables, Yum Yum in The Metropolitan Mikado and Widow Corney in Oliver! (London Palladium).
She also played The Beggar Woman in a concert version of Sweeney Todd alongside Bryn Terfel and Philip Quast at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
Tickets: £16, £14 concessions – available from the box office on 0208 995 6035 or online at www.tabardtheatre.co.uk/.
