Can You See Me Yet? - Brockley Jack Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

DARREN Batten for Language Laid Bare Productions is presenting Timothy Findley’s Can You See Me Yet? at the Brockley Jack Theatre – from Wednesday, June 11 to Sunday, June 29, 2008.

In 1938, when the world is about to go mad with war, an asylum for the insane seems to offer sanctuary for its patients. But as Cassandra Wakelin stands in the heart of the asylum, confusing her fellow inmates with members of her own ill-fated family, the question arises: ‘Can anyone find sanctuary anywhere?’

From the publication of his first novel in 1967 until his death in 2002, Findley was one of Canada’s most compelling and best loved writers. His acclaimed novels include Spadework, Pilgrim, The Piano Man’s Daughter, Not Wanted on the Voyage, Famous Last Words and The Wars.

Findley won the Governor General’s Award twice – for fiction in 1977 for The Wars and for drama in the year 2000 for his play Elizabeth Rex. The recipient of many accolades for his fiction, non-fiction and drama, including the Chalmers Award and the Edgar Award, Findley was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.

Can You See Me Yet? is directed by Joanna Turner who recently directed The Tempest for the Bridewell Theatre’s lunchtime programme. She has also directed several other Shakespeare plays and pieces of new writing on the London Fringe, and has worked as Assistant Director at Shakespeare’s Globe, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera. She is Artistic Director of Baseless Fabric Theatre Company.

Tickets: £11, £8 concessions.

Times: Wednesday to Saturday at 8pm; Sundays at 5pm.
