Candide - Menier's 2013 Christmas production

Theatre preview

FOLLOWING the success of previous festive musicals – Sunday in the Park With George, La Cage Aux Folles, A Little Night Music and Merrily We Roll Along – the Menier Chocolate Factory is presenting a revival of Leonard Bernstein’s 1956 Broadway classic, Candide, for Christmas 2013.

Based on Voltaire’s 1759 novel and originally adapted by Hugh Wheeler, Candide will run at the Southwark venue from December 2, 2013 (previews from November 22) to February 22, 2014.

Candide tells the story of the optimist Candide as he journeys through anguish, happiness, loss and love from Westphalia to the far reaches of the New World.

Candide has music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Richard Wilbur, with additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, John Latouche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker and Bernstein, and includes numbers such as Glitter And Be Gay, Make Our Garden Grow, The Best Of All Possible Worlds and Quiet.

Candide, which premiered on Broadway in 1956 at the Martin Beck Theatre, received its last major London revival at the National Theatre in 1999, when it starred Daniel Evans and Simon Russell Beale.

The Menier’s production will be directed by Matthew White (Top Hat), choreographed by Adam Cooper and designed Paul Farnsworth, with lighting by Paul Anderson, sound by Gareth Owen, musical supervision by David Charles Abell, musical direction by Seann Alderking and orchestrations by Jason Carr.

Casting has not yet been announced.

The hit Broadway musical, The Color Purple, continues at the Menier Chocolate Factory until September 14, 2013. It will be followed – from September 19 to November 16, 2013 – by the American hit comedy, The Lyons.
