The 1945 musical is a romantic fantasy that revolves around the love affair between smooth-talking carousel barker Billy Bigelow and naïve young mill worker Julie Jordan. It includes the songs If I Loved You, The Carousel Waltz, June Is Bustin’ Out all Over and You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Lindsay Posner will direct a cast that also includes one quarter of the musical theatre vocal group Teatro, Jeremiah James (as Billy) and Alexandra Silber (as Julie). Silber was recently seen at the Savoy in Fiddler on the Roof.
Garrett, who has sung for both the English National Opera and the Royal Opera House, has also performed in operas and concerts all over the world, released 11 solo CDs and regularly appeared on television. Her own series, The Lesley Garrett Show, was a huge success.
In 2002, she was awarded a CBE for her Services to Music. And in 2006, she made her musical theatre debut playing the Mother Abbess in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revival of The Sound of Music at the London Palladium.
Posner’s credits include The Hypochondriac, The Birthday Party, Fool for Love, Tom and Viv, Romance, Oleanna and Sexual Perversity in Chicago. Carousel reunites him with the show’s producer Kim Poster of Stanhope Productions Ltd, the two having previously worked together on Fiddler on the Roof which opened at the Savoy in May 2007.
The production is choreographed by former Royal Ballet principal Adam Cooper, designed by William Dudley, with costumes by Deirdre Clancey, lighting by Peter Mumford, orchestrations by Larry Blank and musical direction by David Firman.
Carousel premiered on Broadway in 1945 and in 1956, was adapted for film starring Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones. Its last major London outing was at the National Theatre in 1992 with Nicholas Hytner directing an award-winning production.
The forthcoming tour of Carousel opens at Bromley (Churchill Theatre) on September 26, 2008, before continuing to Edinburgh, Milton Keynes and Wimbledon.
