Chicago extends booking period - again

Suzanne Shaw as Roxie Hart

Story by Lizzie Guilfoyle

THE KANDER and Ebb musical Chicago, the sixth longest-running current West End production, has extended its booking period at the Cambridge Theatre by five months – until August 1, 2009.

Previously Posted: From June 2 until July 12, 2008, Suzanne Shaw will play murderess Roxie Hart in the hit musical Chicago, which is currently booking until February 28, 2009, at the Cambridge Theatre.

Although Shaw shot to stardom as part of the pop group Hear’Say, winners of ITV’s Popstars competition, she made her stage debut at the age of 10 playing the title role in the musical Annie at the Liverpool Empire.

More recently, she starred as the narrator in the West End production of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2005), and as Janet in The Rocky Horror Show (2006), again in the West End. And earlier this year, she became television’s Dancing On Ice champion.

Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, a nightclub singer who dreams of headlining in Vaudeville, but only achieves celebrity status when she murders her lover and enlists the help of Billy Flynn, Chicago’s shrewdest lawyer, to whip up the publicity surrounding the case and ensure her acquittal.

Described as slick, sexy and sassy, Chicago has choreography in the style of the legendary Bob Fosse and a ‘fantastic’ Jazz score, which includes And All That Jazz.

The Kander and Ebb musical opened at the Adelphi Theatre in 1997 and transferred to its current home, the Cambridge Theatre, in April 2006.

The current cast includes Birgitte Hjort Sørensen (as Roxie), Rachel McDowall (as Velma), Terence Maynard (as Billy), Paul Rider (as Amos) and Claudia Shear (as Mama Morton).
