Cirque Éloize presents UK premiere of Hotel at The Peacock

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

CELEBRATING its 25th anniversary, Canadian contemporary circus company Cirque Éloize opens the doors to its new show, Hotel, at The Peacock – from Wednesday, February 20 to Saturday, March 9, 2019.

In an art deco grand hotel, tourists and travellers, the famous and infamous, mingle across the centuries. With 12 dazzling acrobats and musicians, and an original score by Éloi Painchaud, Cirque Éloize showcases the company’s trademark blend of contemporary circus and drama in a place that never sleeps.

Hotel is directed by Emmanuel Guillaume.

Cirque Éloize has become a world leader in contemporary circus since it was founded in 1993, specializing in creating shows that fuse circus arts with music, theatre and dance. The company has travelled to over 550 cities, giving more than 5,500 performances for audiences of over 3.5 million. Combining breath-taking feats with engaging stories, Cirque Éloize has a daring approach to circus techniques and the themes it tackles.

The company last performed in London at The Peacock in October 2017 with Saloon. Previous productions that have been seen at The Peacock include iD, bringing together the world of urban dance and circus arts, and Cirkopolis, the company’s tenth creation, which after a performance in New York in 2014 won the Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience.

Hotel is Cirque Éloize’s 15th production. Director Emmanuel Guillaume said: “There are places where everyone is a stranger to one another and a foreigner to the environs and their customs. Places that bring people in transition together, from tourists, businesswomen and a celebrity, to the anonymous, the denizens of the night and life’s adventurers. Places that inspire encounters…Impromptu encounters that upset the everyday balance of things, draw you into the unexpected, into extravagance and into a new lightness of being.

“Our hotel presents this playground and brings alive the circus maxim that ‘anything is possible.’ Through the language of acrobatics, our artists portray these characters and tell the story of their encounters. Hotel is a glamorous Art Deco world where circus, dance, music and song come together around these human stories – just like life, but even more colourful and vivid.”

Jeannot Painchaud, President and Chief Creative Officer of Cirque Éloize said: “Among the thousands of images that fill our memories of these last 25 years crisscrossing the globe, many involve all those looks exchanged in hundreds of hotels in hundreds of towns. How many stories do our minds create each time we imagine where the man in front of us in line in the lobby comes from? Or when we imagine where the woman checking out is going, and intrigued by so much tenderness, we desire to follow.

“So many real or invented encounters can happen in the lobby of an extraordinary hotel that we imagine them peopled with characters from another era. We let ourselves fall deep into this reverie so that we can now invite you to discover the humorous relationships that unite this strange family that welcomes you each night in their Hotel.”
