Daddy Long Legs - Barn Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

REBECCA Jayne-Davies and Ryan Bennett will star in The Barn Theatre’s upcoming production of Daddy Long Legs. The theatre’s first musical production of 2019, it runs from October 2 to November 2.

The award winning musical, with music and lyrics by Paul Gordon and a book by John Caird, is based on the classic novel by Jean Webster that inspired the 1955 film starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron.

Daddy Long Legs is set in turn-of-the-century New England and tells the story of orphan Jerusha Abbott (Rebecca Jayne-Davies) and her mysterious benefactor, Jervis Pendleton (Ryan Bennett), who agrees to send her to college, and whom she dubs ‘Daddy Long Legs’ after seeing his elongated shadow.

With a score of stunning musical numbers, Daddy Long Legs is the tale of two lives colliding and unfolding through Jerusha’s letters to her Daddy Long Legs. It’s an uplifting piece of theatre that questions identity whilst highlighting the importance of education, imagination and love.

Rebecca Jayne-Davies’ stage credits include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Sheffield Crucible); Pinocchio (National Theatre); Half a Sixpence (Noël Coward Theatre); Legally Blonde (Leicester Curve Theatre); Kiss Me Kate (Théâtre du Châtelet); Anything Goes (UK Tour); Water Babies (Leicester Curve Theatre); Jersey Boys (Prince Edward Theatre) and West Side Story (Royal Shakespeare Company). She has also appeared on screen in Kensaltown and That’s English.

Ryan Bennett’s stage credits include: Nightbook (Sydney Opera House); The Factory (Edinburgh Festival Fringe – 2014); Jersey Boys (International Tour) and Comedy of Errors and Macbeth (Pop Up Globe – Sydney). His screen work includes: Zoe; Misplaced and Our Little Haven.

Daddy Long Legs is directed by Kirstie Davis, whose work in theatre includes six years as Associate Director and then Acting Artistic Director of Watford Palace Theatre, where she directed Top Girls, The Daughter-in-law and The Beauty Queen of Leenane. She was also the Associate Director at Cheltenham Everyman where she led on the new writing, outreach and professional mentoring programmes.

Recent projects include a national tour of Be my Baby by Amanda Whittington, a new play Lie with me by Kaite O’Reilly for LAMDA, a national tour of Sherlock Holmes and the Crimson Cobbles by Toby Hulse, Peter Pan by Robert Marsden for Selladoor Worldwide and Kiss me Quickstep by Amanda Whittington, at Queens Theatre, Hornchurch, New Wolsey, Ipswich and Theatr Clwyd.

Daddy Long Legs is designed by Gregor Donnelly and has musical direction by Charlie Ingles.

Daddy Long Legs is part of The Barn’s 2019 season of in-house productions. The season includes four other productions: a brand new production of the comic thriller, The 39 Steps, which runs until August 10, 2019; a reimagining of Charles Dickens’ festive masterpiece, A Christmas Carol, which runs from November 27 to January 4; and Michael Morpurgo’s The Butterfly Lion and William Shakespeare’s classic history, Henry V, which completed their runs earlier this year.
