Dame Joan Ruddock succeeds Claire Pritchard as Albany Chair

Theatre news

CLAIRE Pritchard is stepping down after eight years as Chair of the Albany Board. She will be succeeded by Dame Joan Ruddock DBE, former Member of Parliament for Lewisham Deptford, who has been an Albany Board member for the last year.

Gavin Barlow, Chief Executive at the Albany said:

“We’re immensely grateful for Claire’s brilliant work as Albany Chair. She has seen the organisation grow exponentially through challenging economic times and has been central to the innovation that is the basis of the organisation’s success.

“We’re delighted Dame Joan Ruddock is stepping into the role. Her roots in Lewisham and Deptford and knowledge of local communities from living and working with them for so many years have made her a huge asset as a Board Member, and make her a fantastic choice to chair the Albany Board.”

Claire Pritchard, out-going Chair of the Albany and CEO of Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency added:

“It has been an honour to serve as Chair of the Albany, and although we have experienced some challenging external pressures in that time, working within the Albany has always been positive, inspiring and exciting. Central to that are the staff, the artists, our Board, our audiences and particularly our local community, who first encouraged me to get involved, and have ensured the Albany has remained central to Deptford and Lewisham.

“I don’t think there could be a more natural successor than Dame Joan Ruddock who has always supported and championed the work of The Albany. As the organisation continues to grow and innovate in exciting and challenging environments, Joan is the perfect lead.”

Dame Joan Ruddock DBE commented:

“It is a real privilege to be asked to chair the Albany Board. Claire has done a wonderful job and will be a hard act to follow. Early in my days as a Member of Parliament I was often called in to avert a crisis but no longer! Today the Albany is thriving and we have great plans for the future. They are not without their challenges but I am greatly looking forward to supporting Gavin and the team in our future development.”

Dame Joan Ruddock DBE, served as MP for Lewisham Deptford for 28 years from 1987 until she stepped down in 2015. Her work as Minister of State at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, campaigns for social justice and equality and her track record of serving her constituents over her career, have put her at the forefront of politics locally and nationally. She is an Honorary Fellow of Goldsmiths, University of London and Honorary Companion of Trinity Laban.
