Declan Bennett and Samuel Barnett star in Kiss of the Spider Woman at the Menier Chocolate Factory

JOSE Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries) and Allan Baker’s new adaptation of Manuel Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman runs at the Menier Chocolate Factory from March 8 to May 5, 2018.

This ground-breaking play is a provocative tale of love, victimisation, fantasy and the friendship that develops between two strikingly different men imprisoned together in a Latin American jail.

Originally a novel, this electrifying story has also been adapted into an Oscar-winning film and a musical.

The cast includes Samuel Barnett (as Molina), Declan Bennett (Valentin) and Grace Cookey-Gam (Warden).

Samuel Barnett’s theatre credits include The History Boys (National Theatre/Broadway – original cast – Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play), the Tony-award-winning productions of Twelfth Night and Richard III (Shakespeare’s Globe/West End/Broadway) and the Olivier-nominated Dealer’s Choice (Menier Chocolate Factory/Trafalgar Studios).

Barnett’s television work includes the title role in the major Netflix series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, and his films include The History Boys.

Declan Bennett’s theatre work includes Jesus in the Olivier-award-winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre) and Guy in Once (original cast – Phoenix Theatre). On television, he played Charlie Cotton in EastEnders.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is directed by Laurie Sansom, whose credits include The James Plays by Rona Munro (Evening Standard Award Best Play) and Beyond The Horizon by Eugene O’Neill (National Theatre – Evening Standard nomination Best Director).

The production is designed by Jon Bausor, with lighting design by Paul Anderson, sound design by Philip Pinsky and projection design by Andrzej Goulding.

Barnum continues at the Menier Chocolate factory until March 3, 2018.
