Dimetos - full casting announced

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

JOINING Jonathan Pryce in Athol Fugard’s Dimetos, which runs at the Donmar Warehouse from March 25 (previews from March 19) to May 9, 2009, will be Anne Reid, Holliday Grainger and Alex Lanipekun.

Written in 1975, Dimetos is described as a moving story about love, guilt, retribution and faith in a modern world of moral decay.

Exhausted with life in the city as a highly skilled engineer, Dimetos (Pryce) escapes to a remote coastal village with his niece and housekeeper in search of a simpler existence. Five years on, a stranger from the metropolis arrives to tempt him back with devastating consequences.

Reid’s previous theatre credits include Happy Now? (National Theatre), Into the Woods (Royal Opera House), Epitaph for George Dillon (Comedy Theatre) and Out of This World (Chichester). On screen she has appeared in Coronation Street (from 1961 to 1971), Ladies of Letters, Shameless and Dinnerladies (TV); Faintheart, Savage Grace and Hot Fuzz (film).

Although Grainger is making her stage debut in Dimetos, she has appeared regularly on television in shows such as Demons, Merlin, Waterloo Road and Where the Heart Is.

Lanipekun recently appeared on stage in the Royal Court production of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Wig Out! He is, however, best known for his role as Ben in the BBC drama Spooks.

Dimetos will be directed by Douglas Hodge, who has just been nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Albin in La Cage Aux Folles. And he was recently seen on television in the thriller Unforgiven.
