Doctor Faustus at The Rose helps A-Level Students

Doctor Faustus

Theatre news

LITTLE Goblin’s production of Doctor Faustus, which is currently playing to sell-out audiences at The Rose Theatre, Bankside, is also proving very popular with A-level students, who will be sitting their exam on Christopher Marlowe’s classic play this week.

One student commented: “Our teacher kept telling us bits of the play were funny, but we didn’t believe her, until we saw it brought to life on stage here. Mephistophilis was really frightening too.”

The damp and gloomy atmosphere of The Rose provides the perfect setting for this dark tale, which was first staged on the same site over 400 years ago.

Seven actors take on multiple roles in this highly physical production, directed by Vince Tycer. Using a minimal set, the ensemble work together to create a variety of creatures and objects, bringing to life the hellish world that Faustus inhabits for 24 years after first conjuring up his devilish sidekick Mephistophilis.

Doctor Faustus continues at The Rose Theatre until June 30, 2011.

Tickets: £12, £10 concessions – available from or from the theatre on 020 7261 9565.

Times: Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm, Sunday at 3pm.
