OLIVIER Award-winning OperaUpClose’s new English version of Donizetti’s Mary, Queen of Scots (Maria Stuarda) will be touring as a fully-staged production to unique and evocative venues across the UK from April 1 to June 22, 2019, visiting the Charterhouse, London from April 24 to April 29.

Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I go head-to-head in this historical tragedy. Donizetti’s riveting opera provides an insight both into a compelling period of British history and current tensions, and culminates in a fictitious meeting between the two rival Tudor Queens, which sizzles with vocal fireworks.

Donizetti’s powerful melodies will be performed in a new orchestration by Paul McKenzie for six singers, accompanied by piano (Paul McKenzie), clarinet (Sarah Douglas) and violin (Stefano d’Ermenegildo).

The cast includes Flora McIntosh as Mary Stuart, Philippa Boyle as Queen Elizabeth, Cliff Zammit Stevens as the Earl of Leicester, Jan Capinski as Lord Cecil, Julian Debreuil as Lord Talbot and Emma Watkinson as Anna.

Orchestrator and musical director is Paul McKenzie, librettist and director is Robin Norton-Hale, set and costume designer is Kate Lane and associate director is Sasha Amaya.
