RIVERSIDE Studios is presenting Simon Callow in Dr. Marigold and Mr. Chops, two rarely seen, one-man plays by Charles Dickens – from December 12, 2009 to January 31, 2010.

A Christmas treat for children and adults alike, Dr. Marigold and Mr. Chops haven’t been seen in London for over 150 years, yet remain as imaginative and compelling as they were in the Dickensian era.

Dickens was renowned for touring the country performing from his own works and these plays are drawn from his greatest success. Moreover, Callow is a passionate exponent of Dickens and is renowned for bringing his work to life.

Callow was last seen on the London stage earlier this year – at the Theatre Royal Haymarket – playing Pozzo in Sean Mathias’ revival of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot alongside Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Ronald Pickup.

Callow’s extensive theatre credits include The Kiss of the Spider Woman (Bush Theatre); Total Eclipse and Faust Parts 1and II (Lyric Hammersmith); Restoration (Royal Court Theatre); Titus Andronicus (Bristol Old Vic); and Amadeus, Sisterly Feelings, Galileo and Single Spies (National Theatre). He also performed The Mystery of Charles Dickens in the West End and on tour internationally.

As a director his work includes Shirley Valentine (West End and Broadway); Les Enfants du Paradis (Royal Shakespeare Company) and Carmen Jones (Old Vic).

And his numerous screen credits include Amadeus, A Room With a View, Maurice, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love, Postcards from the Edge and Chemical Wedding (film); Angels in America, Galileo’s Daughter, Hope Against Hope, Miss Marple, Lewis, Midsomer Murders, The Mystery of Charles Dickens and Dr Who (TV).

Directed by Patrick Garland and designed by Christopher Woods, Dr. Marigold and Mr. Chops is suitable for ages 8 and over.

Running Time: 2 hours (including one interval).
